Laptop fan gone bad...

Hork

Senior member
I was just given an old inspiron 3800 because it was 1) old, and 2) "making loud noises".

I hadn't had any trouble with it until today when I left it on for a while and the fan kicked on. The noise is coming from the fan.

A used fan and heatsink assembly is $10 on ebay, but before I went that route I wanted to check in here. Here are my questions...

Is there any way to fix/lubricate the fan without opening up the system?

I'm not afraid to open up the system and take it apart... if I did, is there any way I could fix this, or do I just need to get a replacement for it?

Since you will have to tear into the laptop.

You should just replace the fan and heatsink assembly..

Lubricating fans can be messy and don't usually last long, so you would have to do it again in awhile anyway.
