Laptop external monitor advice

I'm planning on buying a 20.1" widescreen monitor of 1680x1050 resolution and use it with the VGA out of my A105-S2091 Toshiba (ATI Radeon Xpress 200M chipset; no DVI out). The resolutions offered in the stock resolution screen of the 2nd monitor on the laptop are all 4:3 and support resolutions above the 1900s (width). Will the lappy recognize and adjust to the widescreen resolution automatically if I connect to it or do I have to do a workaround or will it simply not work?

I plan to use it for light tasks and not for gaming or other monitor intensive tasks.
