Laptop dvdrom on a desktop?

I have a friend who wants to use parts from his dead laptop to put into a custom PC and wanted to use the dvdrom from his laptop... Dunno what kind yet, but how hard would this be?

It would depend on the laptop.

A lot of manufacturer's use proprietary connectors (IBM, Sony, Fujitsu)
Some have removable connectors (actually adapters)(Dell, Toshiba)

Then you have the problem of matching a faceplate to the PC case.
