laptop DVD without a bezel

Wife would not let me buy her a new laptop for xmas so I upgraded her old compaq 1800 with a new optical drive and upgraded her 18gb hd to 60gb., upgraded windows ME to windows XP and Office 97 to office 2003.

Made sure to get the same brand optical drive (toshiba). The drive fit swell in her laptop (had to take the heatsink off the CPU to get it in... ack), but the old bezel does not fit on the new drive..... and the new bezel covers part of the floppy bay.

Obvious solution is to hack the new bezel with my dremel so it does not copy the floppy bay... but I won't be able to get the laptop and my dremel in the same state for some time

So question: Will running a laptop optical drive without the bezel for a couple of weeks hurt anything?

Thanks!!!!!!
