Hi, I was wondering if anyone have run across any problems with laptop DVD-RW drives.
I just bought a Gateway MT6711 laptop (Pentium Dual-core T2080 1.7 GHz, 1 G DDR2 RAM, Intel onboard graphics, pretty standard stuff), and it has a 8X DVD-RW, which according to Nero, is a Sony/NEC Optiarc AD-7530a. OS is Vista Home Ultimate
The laptop works fine otherwise, but when I tried to burn a few DVDs (mostly video files) with Nero 7, it was acting pretty funny. The discs ultimately turned out okay when I played it in the DVD drive and on my regular DVD player, but it took 20+ minutes to burn a disc at either 4x or 8x speed. When it's burning, it would go at a normal speed, but would pause a few times. It would usually get to about 10% done, and literally stop there for 2-3 minutes. It would then start burning again, and get to 30% or so, then stop again for 2-3 minutes and so on. This is why it takes 20 minutes to burn a disc.
I though maybe Nero was the problem, so I tried connecting my old USB 2.0 HP External DVD-RW drive to the laptop, and it burned just fine, taking 12 minutes to burn a DVD at 4x speed.
Now do you guys think I've got a hardware problem with my laptop Optiarc drive, or might it be a driver issue with Vista? Is there any software that can assess DVD burner function? I'd rather not bother with contacting Gateway and sending the laptop away to get tested/repaired, so I'm hoping it's more of a software thing, but I would appreciate any opinions/suggestions you might have.
Cheers
