just bought a laptop with XP Home. When I put a CD-r into the cd rom I get an error saying... at the top 'cd isnt formatted'... Then it says the it may be corrupt... or the format isnt compatible with windows. But this cd works fine on my desktop with windows 98. Any clues on whats happening here? Oh and is a laptop safe against static elecricity? Like running it accross your pants or putting it in a carrying bag? I got one today that says i is for a laptop but it is clothe like material.

Thanks,
Josh

Don't know what laptop you're using, but the ones I'm most familiar with (Dell Latitude 600 & IBM Thinkpad A31) have no problems reading CD-R's. Have you tried reading CD-RW's or DVD's and what were the results? I'm thinking the lens on yours is dirty, or there are driver issues with your DVD and XP. If it's a fairly new laptop (hopefully under warranty) could it be taken to a local authorized service center for repair?

As far as static electricity, I don't think I'd take a chance. Laptops are too expensive. Despite their name, I would never use one on my lap or sitting on a bag. Most laptops vent their heat thru the sides and/or bottom, and get quite hot even when sitting on a hard surface.
