Laptop DVD drive is suddenly acting up...

I tried to back up a copy of a movie last night, and I noticed when I put the disc in and close the drive, it would read the disc for a bit, and then there was this grinding sound coming from the drive. However, the disc still played fine and ripped fine, though occasionally I'd still hear that sound.

Today, I tried to back up another disc, and it started doing the same thing...except now it's encountering errors mid-backup. I know the disc is perfectly fine, however.

Also, CDs seem to work without a problem...no weird noises or problems at all.

What's the likely cause, and is there anything I can do to fix the issue myself? I'm thinking the drive is going bad. Is there any way to further test it? If it is going out, I'll call Gateway to get a replacement (hopefully). If that falls through, I'll need a replacement drive for my P-6831FX, which has a weird "cover" shape (the part on the outside with the button on it...I don't know the technical term). So, what would I need to get in order to make sure the drive can properly fit? (it's not a rectangular hole on the outside)

I was wondering if this was just me as well. I've used desktops all my life until recently when i bought a HP laptop and then a Dell laptop.

BOTH laptops use a CD/DVD drive and BOTH have started to make the grinding noise you mention within a few months of purchase. The drives both work fine but everytime i put a CD or DVD in i will hear a grinding noise when it reads the disc or i install a game.

Wish i had some advice for you. I just called up Customer Support and had them replace them.

Yeah, I think I might do that. It's still under warranty.

Solved: Contacted Gateway support about this. I had to go into my registry and delete an "upperfiller" entry. Not only am I now able to watch DVDs or rip them without problems, the grinding noise also seemed to have disappeared. Weird.

This solution is also on Microsoft's website...apparently this can happen after you install Vista SP1, or in my case, SP2 beta.
