Laptop Does Not Turn On

i have an HP dv2000t i got in september 2006. when i push the power button, all the lights turn on (media lights, power button light, etc.) and i think the optical drive works because it makes a noise and i put in a boot disk and from the noise it was making i think it was trying to read it.

but that's it.

* the backlight of the screen turns on but nothing's on the screen.
* HDD doesn't seem to make any boot noise.
* CPU fan doesn't turn on.

CAN ANYONE PLEAAAAASE HELP ME??

i have warranty until september. i've upgraded the RAM myself so i guess i'll have to put the original sticks back in if i send it back to HP, right?

anyway, i will be very grateful for any help.

BTW, i'm calling HP right now but i'm not expecting them to be as helpful as AT 😛

UPDATE
the laptop turned on, windows booted, i logged in and left the computer. i came back and the laptop was off (i think it hibernated because of low battery). it doesn't work again.

this basically confirms it's a software issue, right?

Probably a software glitch. Reseat RAM and reset BIOS to OPTIMIZED DEFAULT. Save and exit.

i did reseat the ram. how would i reset the BIOS?

You might have trouble resetting the BIOS on that model - don't know it and haven't got time to research at the moment.

Look in the manual for CMOS battery.
If you can find it, or if you look at the base of the laptop, look for a small section that can be screwed out, or pulled out.
If it has a little button battery, disconnect it and the main battery and the power cable.
Leave it for a few seconds (I have definitely known a laptop to take upto a week to clear CMOS doing this way), put battery back and try again.

Someone I was talking to just a couple hours ago had a problem similar to yours.
He pulled a stick of RAM from the system and it booted - new stick of RAM later it was as good as new.

i'm still under warranty. would it be better to send it in? i'm just not quite sure what to say...if something is actually wrong, i'd rather have HP replace it so i'll get a new thing anyways. but as i've said, i don't know what is wrong so i don't even know what to ask them to replace

Fair enough - but if you send it in, the chances are you will lose any data on your hdd if they replace the model.
Is there anything on there you need - pics/docs etc?

yea i'm backing that stuff up. i called HP today and they said a box'll get to my place in a day or two to send the laptop back to them.

i'll keep you guys posted in case someone else gets the same problem so they know what's wrong with their laptop too.
