laptop does not recognize new HD

well i got a samsung 40 gig to replace a dying 30 gig hitachi in my ibm T23... the thing is when i swap the drives and boot off the cd to try and load windows, it says i have no hard drive installed... when i swap back to the old drive, it boots up just fine... did I just buy a dead HD? =(

I would check the samsung drive for jumpers. Even the 2.5" have jumpers on them, if there are any jumpers installed, pull them and try....

yea i checked, no jumpers on it.... -sigh- i put this into my working dell 600m as well.. for some reason, neither laptop can "see" the drive

I would lean towards a DOA. Get an exchange for the same model and see if it still does it.

Another option is that you may just need to get the drive partitioned. Some systems have difficulty recognizing drives if they aren't partitioned already. Maybe try downloading/making a good ol' Windows 98 boot floppy or something, boot off it, and run 'fdisk' the old school way to partition the drive.

goodness... not even fdisk can see it. The laptop does not even recognize the drive... going to return it to the seller... -sigh- hope he refunds my money or i'm filing a claim with ebay.. oh boy.

Ebay huh? Hope that laptop harddrive was packaged correctly when he shipped it to you. Can you hear it spin up? Any clicking sounds? ( you might have to put your ear to it)
I'm always wary of used hard-drives.
