Laptop display won't always turn on

I am helping a friend examine her laptop. Sometimes when she powers it on the display won't turn on. I've run memtest and Drive Fitness Test and they pass. She's sent it to Dell twice who've claimed to have fixed it, only to have the problem recur. Suggestions?
