My grandma's laptop (Acer, Pentium M 1.73 GHz, integrated graphics) recently developed a very strange issue. It boots and runs somewhat normally, except that the response time for the monitor is on the order of seconds instead of milliseconds, causing everything graphical to be extremely slow and leading to overlap of images. This starts even while booting, so the Windows starting screen will appear with the Acer logo screen still overlapping on top of it, and going into the BIOS it takes several seconds for the screen to respond to moving around between the options. Once in Windows, nothing goes wrong except that the cursor moves slowly and with lots of ghosting and a delay of a few seconds between moving on the touchpad and the cursor responding, same for opening or closing programs.
We assume the problem is something hardware related, but aren't sure what - maybe in the integrated video or somehow the connection between the video processing and the display is messed up. The problem just appeared suddenly. My only guess as to why is that maybe something overheated and died, because my grandpa regularly uses it on a cushion, not very soft but maybe enough to block some of the bottom ventilation. The laptop is out of warranty and the repair cost from Acer is high enough that it would be worth it to just buy a new laptop, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
