Laptop Display Problems

I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro model 415CS. The display only shows an image on the bottom half, the top half does have raster but no image. I have troubleshooted the mainboard connections and they appear to be ok. When I plug in an external monitor, the external displays just fine, so I don't think it is the video card. Any info what so ever will be greatly appreciated.

hmmm...
my friend had some weird lcd display problems before, and resetting the laptop seemed to do the trick. There should be a little reset hole on the side somewhere that you can stick a pin in.

Your problem could lie in the cable to the LCD or the LCD itself. On laptops I have seen there is also a small inverter board between the LCD and the video "card" itself. You could try to update the BIOS to the latest level or load the BIOS's setup defaults.

That happened to my laptop within the first two weeks, shortly followed the next day by the entire screen dead. The manufacturer tech troubleshot it as a dying inverter board. Since it was covered under my warranty, I just sent in the machine and got it back with (I presume) a replacecd inverter board.

If it's out of warranty, maybe look for parts on eBay or this board?

Old problem, easy fix. Pull the LCD mask off and then remove the LCD. Look at the backside, see the PCB on the LCD itself? There are two amber cables running to that PCB, the top one needs to be reseated. A little non-conductive tape or high-temp hot glue should keep those cables from becoming disconnected in the future.
