Laptop display is Dim unless lid is almost fully closed.

Co-worker has a Compaq Presario 1692 laptop. THe display on the laptop is really really dim (can barely see it at all). However if he closes the lid so it's only open an inch or two, the LCD comes on to full strength. Also if we plug it into a monitor the monitor works just fine.

It seems that the cable connecting the LCD to the System board might be loose or something. Has anyone experienced this before or have any other guesses about what might be wrong?

defintely sounds like a loose cable that is being forced back in as the lid closes. there is also a switch that turns off the lcd when the lid is closed that might be getting depressed somehow.

Yeah but that's the reverse of what's happening. The screen is coming ON when the lid gets almost closed. That's what's so strange.

I'd guess lose cable or something is wrong w/ the lid switch on the LCD, prolly not something he could fix easily might want to take it in to be repaired unless he or you feel confident in reseating the cable that connects the LCD to the rest of the laptop.
