I've never encountered this before. A friend has a Toshiba Satellite 1555CDS, which I assume has a passive matrix display. One day she boots it up & the color is completely inverted, i.e. black is now white, white is now black, blue is now orange, etc. It's very strange & not at all easy on the eyes. If it wasn't a laptop, I'd suspect the pins of the vga cable.

Has anyone ever seen this before?

The only time I've seen anything like this was 7 years ago with my dad's old laptop. I don't remember what brand it was, but the CMOS battery had died, and the BIOS didn't recognize the display. That led to the LCD not displaying colors properly (everything was a different shade of black).

Has she tried adjusting the contrast of the LCD? The adjustment knob is on the right side of the LCD. They get moved around sometimes when the laptop gets pulled out of the bag or things like that.

On my Dell Inspiron, it looks like there is a function key combination to invert the screen. It does not work though.

Those are signs of a bad lcd there... try hooking up a monitor to external video to rule out the mainboard, but I'm betting on the lcd here. On laptops, a bad lcd cable typically shows up as horizontal lines on lcd or just a white screen on the lcd.
