Laptop Display and Lag Issues

My laptop is an ASUS G550JK with an i7-4710HQ CPU @2.5GHz.
GPU is NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M

For the past few days my laptop has been having occasional display issues. The laptop screen will go black but it is still running as there is no disruption in audio. Recently, the laptop screen begins flickering for a few seconds before going black. If I leave it, it sometimes comes back on without any more problems, but sometimes it comes back if I shift the angle of my screen.

The part that really bothers me is recently, I have experienced a great deal of graphics lag when playing video games. What I noticed is that my laptop doesn't seem to heat up as much as it used to when playing games, leading me to believe that either the resources aren't being used properly, or something isn't functioning quite correctly. Any advice is much appreciated.

Do you get the same graphical issues when plugging your laptop into an external monitor? I'm wondering if maybe using the external monitor can isolate the problem.

Is it getting hot when this occurs? Sounds like a mixture of throttling and overheating, which can cause framerate reductions and graphical distortions. The screen totally shutting off and turning back on sounds like a screen on the fritz, a failing connector or a failing GPU.

Make any software changes lately? Like upgrading to 10? If you did the upgrade around the time this started, you may want to go to Nvidia's site and get the latest driver.

Nerp's idea of throttling does seem to fit the bill on this one. Where is the laptop when this happens? Make sure nothing is covering the air intake/exhaust vents when it's running. A table or other flat surface is the best place to put a laptop while gaming.

If you are on a good surface when this happens, then you may want to get some compressed air and blow out any dust.

screen blackouts and flickering is usually the result of a connection problem with the backlight.

if your using wifi conenction see if there any lag using wired. with any pc make sure there no malware or viruses on it. run a malware scan and make sure your anti virus is up to date. micro soft/avg/avast and a few other have free anti virus software. check with the model number on the bottom of the laptop.
