Laptop defaults wireless connection before hardline.

My Dell 9300 Laptop is plugged into a Hard line DSL connection. There are wireless connections around and for some reason the Wireless connection is taking precedence over the hardline.

Is there a setting for this some where?

If both adapters are enabled they will both always work. The easiest way to go wired only is to disable the wireless controller. You can disable it in windows or your laptop probably has a keyboard switch.....on my Dell the switch is Fn+F2.

My Compaq just senses the faster connection, so if it's Ethernet/WiFi it connects through Ethernet, if it's WiFi/Dialup, it goes to WiFi.

They're all suppossed to do that in theory...mine still somtimes picks the wifi connection when i log onto VPN

Many Laptops come with both Wired Network Card and Wireless Card.

It is possible to establish priority to force the connetion through the card that you would like to work as default.

Windows TCP/IP stack can be configured with Network Metrics.

To prioritize the connection to default to the Wired card, put a Metrics of 10 in the Wired TCP/IP?s properties, and a Metrics of 20 in the Wireless.

When the Wire is unplugged to would have Wireless connection. When the Wired plug it would take over the connection since it as lower metrics.

1. In Control Panel, double-click Network Connections.
2. Right-click a network interfaces, and then clicks Properties.
3. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
4. On the General tab, click Advanced.
5. To specify a metric, on the IP Settings tab, click to clear the Automatic metric check box, and then enter the metric that you want in the Interface Metric field.

Look like this. http://www.ezlan.net/network/metrics.jpg

Reverse the numbers if you would like the Network connection to default to the Wireless Card.

Note the same configuration would work with a Desktop or any other computer that have dual Cards.
