Laptop DDR2 Question

Stupid question, but I'm upgrading from an RDRAM system, and know little about DDR. I'm building a Dell E1505 C2D, and want to get the minimum amount of RAM, as I can get it cheaper from someone else. The cheapest solution is 512MB of single channel DDR2 RAM. If I select that, is it, in any way, going to limit me from putting 2x1GB dual channel DDR2 in later? The system isn't built for single channel or anything, right? It just means 1 DIMM?

You do not need to match pairs like with RDRAM. You can use any two sticks of RAM (mix & match size) for dual channel performance, but you can also use one stick for single channel just fine. I tested the old Sonoma 915 chipset with dual channel and didn't find much benefit from dual channel:

We're working on an article right now measuring the differences in RAM on a Core Duo platform. Core 2 Duo will benefit even more from dual channel than Core Duo, since it is a more data hungry core.
