I have a dell inspiron 8500 with p4-m 2.2 ghz and 768 mb DDR ram

i recently upgraded my hard drive, from a 30 gb 4200 rpm toshiba HDD to a 60 gb 5400 rpm IBM/Hitachi HDD, the drive makes a weird clicking noise, normally (when on AC or on battery) when i run on battery almost everytime after 5-10 mins, the whole comp freezes, this never happened on the old DRIVE

Could it be a hard drive problem ? the clicking noise comes on all the time, even when idling, but its weird that it only crashes when running on battery

Sure that could be a hard drive problem. It is not supposed to "click" like it does. Does putting the old drive back in cause a lockup? I think it's time to backup your data and pull that drive.

Well if it never happened on your old drive then it's quite evident the new drive is at fault. There is little you can do other than get an exchange.
