laptop crashes/requires three power-ups to boot

this may not be the right forum, but i leave it for the best minds.

micron p166 few years old. fine machine, but it crashes all the time. it won't boot unless you turn the power on then off a few times. then it might go for hours without trouble. then abruptly crashes. running win95.

i'm guessing this problem is a dying motherboard, but hoping you guys will prove me wrong. great portable word processing and browsing machine; hate to trash it.
