you need to gives us more details, in terms of performance I think the HD4000 will only beat things like the 5470/6370m, anything higher should be better, but yes, it will also user more power.

Dedicated card will use more power meaning more heat, plus cost more. So unless its performance you require, on expensive of heat and power. Then no.

Intel CPUs are an excellent choice if there s a discrete GFX ,
otherwise , if there s only an integrated GPU , you ll better
stick with an AMD A10 mobile , the laptop lifecycle will be
substancialy longer.

hmm. Thanks for replies.i was looking at the lenovo y500 although i would like a 17 inch screen.I travel all the time so i use the laptop for everything including entertainment.I play games on it occasionally. My current lap has only an i3 m370 and i can play games on it ok at low setting.i even have skyrim on it belive it or not)So i figure an i7 or maybe even an i5 would suffice. But i know the proc gets hot while gaming so i was thinking if i should get a dedicated card to help keep temps down and maybe prolong cpu life.If not i can forgo the dedicated card save some money and put it towards something with better build quality.Any suggestions??I like the looks of the asus g75 but thats too much money for me,they look they would cool nicely.

What kind of games do you play? If you get a 760p display and only want to play older or less graphically intense games, the A10 seems like the best choice. If you want to play current, more demanding games at 1080p you will need a dedicated card at least the level of the GT650M GDDR5. If you go AMD though, I would advise only the A10. The lower tier APU have cut down graphics and probably are not much better than HD4000.

If you only want to play casual type games, surf the web and watch videos, HD4000 is more than adequate.

If you are in no hurry, you might want to wait for Haswell and/or Richland. Haswell is supposed to be a considerable improvement over HD4000, and Richland is a speed bump over the current AMD APU and is supposed to improve power consumption as well.

In regards to heat, any discrete card with decent performance, like the 650M or above will use more power and thus generate more heat. Whether you have overheating problems or not will depend on the design of the notebook and how well it dissipates the heat.
