Laptop CPU = What/when is the next generation?

I'm about to spend ~$3800 on a Panasonic Toughbook (Ruggedized laptop) with a 1.6GHz Centrino CPU (1MB cache, or course). My question to all of you hardware experts out there: What/when is the next generation of laptop CPU coming? I don't want to dump $3800 (I realize I *could* get a full cheap centrino for ~$1100) if a newer and faster laptop CPU is coming out within 6 months -- however, it it's more than 6 months down the road, I think i'm going to dump my money into the quality product.

Any feedback would be appreciated..

Thanks,
Merlin

$3800 for a Panasonic laptop? You realize you can get a top of the line IBM for that price.

I think the original poster is after something more durable. If not, would be worth shopping around.

Um, I wouldn't recommend dumping $3800 on a laptop. Just go to IBM's site and configure something with a P-M, a drive of your liking (60 or 80gb), some wireless b or g, 512 ram or 1gb, etc.

To answer your question, intel is planning to shrink the Banias chip to ramp up more clock speed. I forgot the core's name, but you'll be able to find it in some articles.

Well the Pentium-M is relatively new, but there is however a replacement of the Banais core (130nm fabrication technology) with the Dothan, expected to launch on feb. 4th, which is on the 90nm fabrication technology with 2MB of L2 cache and higher core-clock.

So... The Dothan is going to crush the Banaias core (Centrino)? So, i should *definitely* not get a Centrino right now?
