I just got a 600m and I was wondering if anyone with P4-Ms or any other PC-based laptop had a dilemma in finding reasonably priced cpus for upgrading their laptops. I'm crossing my fingers that my decision to go with the bare minimum 1.3 GHz to upgrade later for less than the $100/GHz rate Dell was selling their computers for was a sound one. Thanks.

do you know what the limit is on the 600m motherboard? it might be limited to a certain max speed. i haven't seen any places that sell Pentium-M processors by themselves yet. and i think opening it up and replacing the processor voids your warranty.

I looked on Pricewatch (Search String=Centrino) and that was what I came up with. Still looks pretty pricey ($695 for the 1.6GHz version, $469 for the 1.5GHz). They just came out, so they should have a drastic drop in price.
I'd assume that all the 600m's use the same motherboard, so you should be able to stick in a faster Pentium-M later with no problems (I've upgraded processors in Dell Inspiron 4000's before, with absolutely no problems)

i got a p4 1.9m from ebay used.
paid $100 and it upgraded my dell 2650c celeron 1.4 to P4 1.9m.
there is a category on ebay for laptop processors.

I didn't know that you can just upgrade from a celeron cpu to a p4 cpu without upgrading the mobo. Sweet. I'm guessing that the same doesn't apply to p4s and p-ms.

Oh, and the link on pricewatch was only good for the P-M 1.3 GHz chips but not for 3d-view.com or whatever that site's called. Hopefully prices go down from what it is right now, but it sure as hell is better than the OEM upgrade Dell offers when you buy the computer.

i don't know about other brands but the dell upgrade was easy.
the celeron and p4 use the same socket, the only problem could be the bios of the motherboard.
some manufacturers could prevent the motherboard from recognizing the p4 i bet.
