Hello everyone , new to the forum :) , was repasting laptop cpu when i noticed the round gold dot on top of the cpu one of them has faded and possibly do to when I removed the factory paste job I was very careful and used right tools not my first time, but sure wanted to know if this has any long term effect pictures will show and mostly when you run the light over it you can mostly notice it that one dot has faded. Thank you all for the time.

Those are diagnostic pin pads used for when the cpu is being diagnoised inhouse.

They will not effect you in anyway unless u have a crack on the actual pcb board which the die is sitting on.
So dont worry even if they do get faded. They dont apply to you as the typical consumer does not have the required tools to get data / messurements off those pin pads.

Thank you very much for taking your time and helping me,

One or two small questions it also had this black film type material maybe Kapton tape/ Polyimide type on it with semi strong adhesive, I pealed it off do to the thermal paste they had used was to much from factory it went under it and only way to get it completely off was to remove and clean , used Arctic Clean , I have kapton/polyimide tape also have scotch 33+ , which one would be better? I believe they put this on cpus and gpus at factory since cpu is soldered to the mobo it goes through heat treatment so to protect, I don't know if it's for protection from copper heat sink that sits on top.

Thank you very much again for your time I know it's a lot i said more than one or two. Image link

Was that tape underneath the heatsink bracket? It might be used to isolate the metal of the bracket from the diagnostic pins on the CPU board. Definitely use Kapton tape.

Hello , sorry for the late reply, yes the tape was underneath the heat sink bracket and yes covering diagnostic pins on CPU board, used Kapton and MX-4 compound , in the beginning the temps around 42c after repaste, before the repaste stock factory I was getting 47-51c idle & load 64-65c 30 min stress test xtu , then I decided to run intel XTU stress test after repaste again it slowly went up to 61c I stopped and after that the temps started to run hotter jumping from 47-55c idle and and on start up hitting 55c also? I am not sure why hot like that under voltage does not help at all ?

That's a lot of tape. I would have either only covered the pins or just taken a few small pieces of tape to hold the insulating pad in place on the heatsink bracket. Probably isn't affected your thermals much, though.

How long did you let your PC idle before taking readings? Laptops seem to take a while to cool, especially if the fan isn't running. If you're using HWMonitor, you can also look at your CPU utilization. Make sure it's around 0-2% at idle, but even moving the mouse will make it jump.

It's possible you put too much thermal compound on, but it usually takes a little while for it to completely spread and temps to even out. I re-did my laptop's thermal compound a few days ago and after I did it my idle temps were around 45-50C, but now they're closer to 40C. It'll also depend on where the laptop is sitting - on a bed it'll get hotter than on a table.

To be honest, as long as your full load temps are within a reasonable range (<75C), I probably wouldn't worry too much about idle temps. Let it be and check back after a day of usage to see if they have improved.

Thanks again for your reply, it's a bit harder to work with this tape than others but I was just trying to cover the same foot print as before when the heat shield pad was there from factory if I had a pre cut stamping it would be looking less out of place lol, that being said yes maybe thermal compound potentially might need a repaste again. First was like 10 min of idle wait , then I waited like 30 min , I believe windows update was running in the background but that is possibly a maybe, I think I might disable the windows update in system services to see if that will change anything. MX-4 paste is good enough where I don't think that is the weakest link.
