laptop cpu questions

i'm currently shopping for a used laptop on ebay and i'm not sure what cpu is fastest. I'll mostly use the laptop for web browsing and playing non cpu intensive games online (chess, cards, etc...) But i want the system to be as fast and responsive as possible. I'll also be running the Fritz8 (chess program), so the faster the system can calculate variations the better. i'm talkin about pure number crunching. I don't really want to spend more than $600. i see alot of PIII 800-1200 in my price range. i don't know much about the Pentium M, the Celeron cores and the P4s. any insight on the various cores and their pros and cons would be great.

without knowing what optimizations are in play on that specific program it'll be hard to say. in general the number crunching capability of a p4 is about 66% to 75% less per mhz than a p3 or pentium-m.
