planning on pulling the trigger on an asus zenbook with i5 6200u and 8gb ram, with integrated intel 520 graphics. is there anything coming out within the next few months that would be worth waiting for?

Worth noting that OEMs might do new chassis designs and show case them at CES.

I wouldn't be surprised if others start pushing bezel less displays this year.

the question is why should you go for that option. If is thin, better fo with an Surface Pro 4. If you want power go and find the i5 6300 HQ based. Over 50% more powerful than the U tier.

Depends on what it's for. I got a Dell 13" with the Core i5 6200U for $500. It's a decent machine.

If you are looking for i5 6300HQ, you might as well look for i7 6700HQ if your budget allows it and if the price differences aren't too steep. Keep in mind that the 6700HQ supports HT while the 6300HQ doesn't and both are 45w parts.

To answer your question, no. If you want an ultrabook type formfactor, Skylake U is the best you can get, and probably will be for at least a year. If you want more power in a larger, heavier package, quad haswell and skylake are out now, and nothing better is coming for quite some time either.

Depending on the price of the Zenbook, SP4 might be worth considering, but it will cost over a thousand dollars with the i5 and an attachable keyboard. It has the advantage of being a true tablet, but I think an ultrabook is easier to use in laptop mode.

But what about these upcoming 28watt TDP cpus?

i7-6567U
i5-6287U
i5-6267U
i3-6167U

They can turbo to higher clocks than the 15watt ones and will have the iris 550 integrated video card, which might be equal or faster to a nvidia 940m?

Or, will they not be released for laptops?

The only place I can see these parts end up to is the MBP13. Don't wait out to get these parts for the other brands, they would probably put these in a few models near the release of KBL.

Well ASUS has used those 28W 'U' parts in the past, but these notebooks usually cost more than bread and butter 15W GT2 Core i5-based models.

I knew that too. The Iris 5100 was not very impressive back then. Intel really screwed up the 28w line-up by not adding eDRAM on those parts back then. That might have left some other companies not very good first impressions.

Still, would be interested to see how much the Iris 550 can dish out ;)

Hm, well acer had brodwell i5 with iris 6100 for half a year now(maybe longer):

http://www.amazon.de/Acer-E5-573-54...TF8&qid=1451228748&sr=8-1&keywords=iris+intel

The price is not that outrageous compared to the standard i5 models. With the new edram models intel could pretty much capture the low end nvidia market, it's just frustrating that these models are so rare :'(.

I would gladly buy one even if it meant paying a bit more, as it's less of a hassle to deal with intel open source drivers on linux, than those nvidia binary blobs.

Or spend a bit more for the i5 6300 or 6440 (4 true cores rather than 2C/4T ULV).

That's about 200 euro more at minimum and you still don't have iris with edram, granted they come with much more powerful nvidia cards, but aren't the 4 core models a bit of heavy, no battery life furnaces compared to the U ones?

The Iris 6100 does not have EDRAM and is barely any faster than HD 520. I would not recommend it.

Neither would i, if i could find a better deal for a 1080p screen and a cpu that benchmarks show is faster than the 6200u and its 520 hd?

Edit: Well, that nice price is now over, so yeah, as of now i don't recommend it either :))
