I have an option to select either a Sony VAIO with a Core 2 Duo T5500 processor or an HP with an AMD TL50 processor. These are the only 2 under consideration.
I am unable to decide which one to get. Please help.

I am kinda partial to the AMD because I have an Opteron 170 as a desktop at home, but dont know how it compares with the Core 2 Duo in terms of performance and also affinity to Vista.

I also know these 2 are probably the lowest end offerings in the laptop range, but like I said, my options are limited.

Actually, the low end laptops are Celeron/Pentium M/Core Solo .. and any AMD proc. C2D will smoke that TL50 under every circumstance.

But, how's the price, ram, and what video solution for each? All other things being fairly equal, the C2D is the easy choice. But, I'd take the AMD w/1GB ram over the C2D w/512, or with other bonuses :)

Thanks for the reply. Price both are the same.
I am getting 512Mb RAM on both. I will have to upgrade them at a later point.

On the Vaio
13.3" Wide (WXGA: 1280 x 800) TFT colour display
Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950
Video Memory 128MB

On the HP
ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 with up to 128-MB shared system memory - 15" XGA TFT

Definitely go with the Core 2 Duo. Upgrading RAM is the simplest of all computer upgrades; upgrading laptop motherboards is impossible.;)

I wouldn't touch any of the AMD mobile processors and I work at AMD; in-fact - I bring my T60 over a lot and get some nasty looks ^_^

:( That's an awfully tiny screen .. I have a friend w/a Dell B130 and 14" Wide .. and it's pretty small. Any chance of a screen upgrade to a 15.4 or so?

I have an option on the 15 inch but am getting this for my wife and she wants it to be light in weight.

Thanks folks for all the replies, I am going with the Core 2 Duo.
