Laptop cooling

My roomates both have laptops (dell and Toshiba) and they've had the problem of them shutting off. I'm guessing they are getting over heated and using a safety shut off. But the only thing either of them do is leave the latop on the desk (now elevated by books thanks to me) and run them for sometimes days at a time. Is there anyhting i can do to help them other than put books behind the latop to make it tild forward and the intake fans pull air through it?

I use to have the same problem with my Toshiba labtop. I always leave it on allnight and sometimes during the day when I use it the fan would go crazy and the comp would shut off. I found that taking some compressed air and spraying it in the intake fan with the comp turned off. When I did that a puff of dust came out and not it runs silently again.
