Laptop Coolers - Do they work well?

Wife and I both have laptops. We normally use them while sitting on the couch with the laptop on our lap. They get really hot on the bottom so I'm looking into laptop coolers. Even if they don't cool the laptop much, it'd at least give it better airflow and keep my legs from burning.

Anyway, Monoprice has four. 3 ranging from $9-$14 or so and one for $32.

UPDATE: I think I'm going to go with this one:

It doesn't have any reviews anywhere that I can find though. Anyone have this one or something close to it? For only $9 each (I need two) I guess I can't go wrong.

Just get what's cheapest, and has the design style you like. They're all kind of crappy, so I wouldn't invest much money in one. I have all cheapies, and they work well enough.

Edit: I'm not sure what they mean with exhausting hot air through a slot. The ones I'm familiar with draw air through a slot, and blow it on the bottom of the computer.

They actually draw the air from the top and exhaust it through the slot in the back.

At least Antec does:

You might be able to get it on sale with or without rebates for between ~$10 - $20.

If they don't actually cool down the components, at least they don't allow you to block the openings/grills at the bottom of the laptop - these are essential for proper cooling.

Even a laptop board without fans is better than just a direct placement of the notebook on your... lap, or a comforter/sheets in bed.

Sometimes I just find a large, hardcover book and set it on that on my lap just to block the heat. And it just seems strange to blow down since the laptop sucks air in from the bottom and blows up and the cooler sucks in from the top and blows down (or out the back). The cooler wouldn't really be accomplishing anything... hmm.

Of course I guess it they are openable, I could just reverse the fan and make it blow the other direction...

I use one on my Dell Inspiron 5100, 2.66 P4, and it makes a significant difference in the feel of the laptop, and also makes it virtually unnecessary for the cpu fan to run at all. Wouldn't use a laptop without one. I have a generic one with 3 fans, usb powered, and an on/off switch. And it is quiet enought not to be offensive to me. I paid around 22 dollars for it a couple of years ago at a compuer show.

For placing it between your lap and the laptop, it's probably a good idea to use a laptop cooler. Aside from this situation, none of them really help.

If you keep it on your desk, you are probably correct.

But I use mine on my lap and... in bed! You would't place it on your bedsheets without the cooler, would you...?

IMHO, it is more beneficial than cumbersome, and I use mine at all times in all locations.
