Laptop connects to linksys router through wireless, but can't connect to the internet. Why?

My parents bought a linksys router with matching network card so their laptop could connect wirelessly to the internet. I hooked up my computer via cable to the router and it seems to work. However, when I finished installing the network card to their laptop and connecting it to the router, it wouldn't allow internet access. I checked the connection status and it says that it has connected to the access point, but can't connect to the internet. How does this make sense? My computer can connect to the internet, albeit via cable, and has no problems.

Perhaps it's because I set up a secured network? Can anyone recommend anything? I'm a complete newbie to this and the next alternative is to get a technician to come over and do it himself, which is costly.

Saying connected does not mean that you have a functional Wireless connection.

If the Wireless can transfer and exchange information with the desktop then the Wireless aspects of the connection works OK.

Otherwise you probably think that your wireless works but it does not or it is not a stable connection.

You need to enter the security settings in the linksys control panel on the laptop most likely. Did you enable something called WEP?
