Hi

I have an old laptop and some parts of it are broken or are dying and I need to replace them as soon as possible, but also want to add new features to the laptop if the motherboard allows it.

Here is The Model Of My Laptop:Sony PCG-FRV25 and some specs
Intel Pentium 4
ATI IGP
Integrated Sound Card

The Problems I am having with the laptop are the following

1.The CD Drive is dying it hardly ever boots

I was wondering if I could replace it with a drive that Reads/Writes to all CD And DVD Formats,I was wondering if I can just go to the store buy a drive and replace the old one or if it has to be a specific model.

2.Want to replace my ram to gain some speed

I want to replace the Ram to the biggest capacity that my laptop supports
which Ram do I buy and is it cheap.

3.My LCD Screen went dark a couple of years ago I have been using a big old CRT monitor but I want to take the laptop to the coffee shop and I can't do not want to take the heavy monitor with me can I go to TigerDirect and get a backlight and replace it myself

4.Can I buy OEM parts from TigerDirect to keep the cost down.

From the sound of it, that laptop is going to be more trouble than it's worth.

I would try to find a used one for cheap, personally.

As for your questions:

1. You can but it's $$$ and a PITA.
2. You can but it will be $$$ compared to DDR2.
3. That sounds difficult if not impossible on many levels, plus probably $$$.
4. Probably, but how do you intend on finding the backlight bulbs? The CD drive may also be hard to obtain.

so basically.. after spending all that money to upgrade it, you'll have spent almost as much as the cost of a new one

And, in addition, Sony Vaio's are very proprietary in design (a Sony tradition) and do not lend themselves to user upgrades.

Your best bet is to check E-Bay. There is one like yours biddable for $7 (reserve). There are also backlights and parts. Forget Tiger Direct.

Yep, ebay is your bet. You should be able to find a replacement CD drive and replacement screen/inverter.

I wouldn't bother though. Sell it for parts and buy a new one here on the FST forum.
