Laptop comes w/ WinME, should I leave that on there, put Win2K, or Win98SE instead?

Ordered the Dell Inspiron 4000. I'll be doing some gaming, but probably not too too much. More Office type stuff. I read the big long thread of Win2K vs 98, but I was wondering if that was the same for laptops? Thanks!]

That depends on how much ram you have. If you got enough ram (128mb abs minumum or 256 recommended) you should consider running W2K. W2K is much more stable and will also allow you to play most games. If you got 64-128mb I would say stick with 98se.

Remember that you won't get much gaming perfomance from a laptop because of videocard limitations etc.

Also check that driver for W2K are available. (Dell provides good W2K drivers as far as I remember)

If you got more questions feel free to ask :)

I ordered it with 128MB. I may get some more memory from crucial, its MUCH cheaper than dell, wish I knew that THEN! :) Anyways it's also got the ATI Rage Mobility 128 3D card. Much more than I'm used to on my Matrox Mystique 220 2MB :)

I'm running Win2000 on my Dell Inspiron 7500. It started with 128megs of ram and Win98se. I installed Win2000 and it ran OK but runs noticably faster since I installed another 128 megs (Crucial). I much prefer Win2000 over Win98, it's much more stable. I've never had a BSOD since I started using it about a year ago. All the games I've played run fine, I have no issues with Win2000 on my laptop at all, I give it "two thumbs up"! Go for it!

Why not dual boot WinME and win2000?WinME sucks but it will be better for gaming than win2000.

Dual booting divides your resources. I say get Win2k and put that on. I love Win2k on my machine and also in the deparment I work for 90% of the problems people have come from Win98 or 95 machines (we don't do WinMe), though about 60% of the machines are running Win2k.
