go with the dell, i'd say for the faster HDD it will make a world of differences. You'll also wanna head over to newegg and grab anything from an addition 256 to 1024 mb of ram since you will be using photoshop. In fact if it will be lots of photoshop, i'd say go with 2 x 1gb sticks

I'd go Dell. Though for that price I would think you could pick up a Inspiron 6000 with integrated video for about the same price.

In fact, I just did it and came out to around 730 before any shipping and tax. The retail of the laptop is 1108, so find yourself one those spiffy 40% off coupons, and you're to about $670 before tax and shipping?

What do you get by going to a Inspiron 6000?
Sonoma Support - Want to use a swanky new 533mhz FSB PentiumM in the future? Now you can
Dual Channel DDR2 - Not that it matters much on a PentiumM...
Intel 915G Chipset - Instead of the 855GME that will be in the 2200
Optional graphics card - You can configure it with a 64MB X300 so you might have some expandability in the future. If you buy it without this option to begin with, you can't add it later.
Intel 2200bg WiFi card
Optional WSXGA screen - 1680x1050 resolution to be pimpin them Photoshop images
Bluetooth support

I went and configured another one with the 64MB X300 (hyper memory but at least you still get the PCI-Express slot) and a WSXGA screen and it came out to $800 after a 40% off coupon.

If you are happy without the WSXGA screen and X300, you could always go for the Celeron model and pin-mod it to a 533FSB >😀

I'm using a 35% off coupon. I did a configuration of the Inspiron6000 with similar specs, 6000 having a slower P-M 1.5 ghz processor but a .4" wider screen. The price was about $150 more expensive so I didnt think it was worth it. A lot more with an X300 video card.

Which system are you configuring? I don't even see a i6000 with a 1.5 Pm option anymore.

And don't forget about pin-modding. If you get the slower 1.6 or the 1.5 in a i6000, you can pin-mod it to run at 533, which will turn them into 2.13 or 2.0ghz.

I was going to do that and ordered my i6000 with a Pm 725, but they sent me a 730 instead 🙁

Right & With Shipping/Tax Total is $820/$890. Where as the Inspiron 2200 is $710 with shipping & tax. I dont think the extra $110 or so is worth the .4" wider screen & a few other things.

Man I hope you are going to pick up some more ram irregardless to which you choose I don't care what CPU/HDD you have 256MB is still 256MB of RAM and on XP that just plain sucks.

The Inspiron 2200 is the same chasis as the Inspirion 1000/1200 and I've dealt with a few its just a diffrent route I suppose the chasis just screams cheapness (honestly most Dell laptops do, but these are worse). I will admit that the laptop is fairly rigid and should hold up well but honestly I would go with a Inspiron 6000 if nothing else for the styling. If your looking for a good deal check out the Dell outlet as of now there are about a dozen Inspiron 6000s with 1.3Ghz Celeron/256MB/40GB 5400rpm/Combo Drive/Intel 2200 B/G wireless for $599 + ship.

Not looking into buying a refurbished product & dont care much for styling about the notebook. And yeah of course I'm going to pick at least another stick of 256 mb ram in there.

The advantage to going with the 6000 is build quality and new technology. The 2200's are dirt cheap doorstops, no doubt; don't plan on taking this everywhere you go for very long without having problems. If its just staying at home, that 2200 is really a powerhouse compared to the Acer. The 6000 has the Sonoma platform, which doesn't bring too many improvements, but why buy old tech?

The 6000 will offer more choices in the future upgrade department, but if you want to stick close to $700 including tax and all, and still have a great computer, I miht just pick the Acer in this case. As long as you were instantly ready to remove the Sempron 2800+ and replace it with a AthlonXP-m 3200+, and as long as it wouldn't be relied on to be used for very much. If it was just casual web surfig/email, etc, thats what I would do.

It's gonna be on my desk 90% of the time so the build quality doesnt have to be that great but then again I dont want it to be some cheap crap that'll break easily.

Going with the the Acer & paying an extra $100 for a mobile barton, that's intriguing as well. However for photoshop will it make too much of a difference? I think the sempron 2800 might be fine & getting 1gb of ram would further increase performance in photoshop then lets say 3200 with 512mb. I'm not gonna play any games on it. The 4200rpm HD might be a bottleneck as well? The Dell 2200 with 1GB of ram & 7200rpm HD would give me best overall performance for what I'm looking for I suppose. Maybe I'll save up a bit more & increase my price range to $1000 & see whats good then.
