Is there any drawback to leaving my laptop plugged into a wall outlet for an extended period of time? This means even if the battery does not need charging. Also, does the same thing apply for my cell phone? Thanks for your help.
I've really only had experience with NiCads which required charging and discharging for longest life. I'm unsure of the need for doing it for batteries of different composition. My best guess is to discharge it at least once a week by unplugging computer while you use it.
You have to have a REALLY GOOD charging circuit to prevent overcharging batteries. Once the batteries are fully charged, you should disconnect the charger whenever you are not using your notebook. With the newer NiMH or Lithium Ion batteries you aren't supposed to have to fully discharge them, but I have seen recommendations to do it occasionally anyway - perhaps once a month. I second the notion.
