i own a gateway solo 2550 laptop computer, im running at 750 mhz, 288mb ram, windows millenium, and i have a small problem. I bought a cdrw internal LG8080n, 8x4x24 burnproof, i installed it into the laptop and it will not boot up with the drive inserted..I did notice on the cdrom i removed there was a jumper setting switch set to master, the cdrw drive has no jumper settings...upon further fooling around with it i got it to work flawlessly by removing the cdrw until the computers bios activated, then slide it in before windows boots, this method works but its a pain in the ass and im afraid by swapping like this everytime i use the unit something will eventually fail...what i'm asking is if anyone has a better solution, different drive, different bios configuration..etc...etc..i would really appreciate some help...Thanks!

its possible its an incompatible drive. thats odd that your old drive had a jumper, most drives dont on laptops, as they all seem to use cable select and auto jumper just like the hard drive are like (jumpers are also optional on hard drives)

In general it's best to use OE parts if you are replacing internals. The only real exceptions to this are HDDs and RAM. Still, when was the last time you updated your BIOS? Sounds to me as though your BIOS doesn't support the CDRW drive. Also, if your computer can hot-swap drives, then you could just boot into Windows and then swap the drives. I'd say try updating the BIOS first.

EDIT: The OE being best only refers to laptops, and only because there is less possibility of things getting farked up.
