Arrggh! I've been trying to find a way to use a laptop cdrom drive for a minibox project. I didn't realize just how proprietary laptop stuff really is. I found an adapter, here, apparently the same as the one from Baber,

cableclub

but having done some homework, I realize that it won't work on just any laptop drive, they have a variety of interface connectors, some of which aren't shown on vendor sites.

Anybody have any experience with this, who can make a recommendation as to parts that will actually work together?

If the laptop drive is listed as ATAPI it should have the mini d style connector

I think it's just older drives that had the one like a shrunk standard IDE
