LAPTOP CD-ROM Trouble

I'm using a Toshiba Satellite laptop and I can't get the CD-ROM Drive to appear anywhere, software-wise. Any ideas to fix this?

not much info there... you need to check if its being detected in the bios... what OS are you running? are your controller drivers running properly?

Not detected in the BIOS. It's like there's nowhere in the BIOS that should detect it. Has space for HD and floppy, that's it. Running Win98 SE. No controller drivers exist. I installed Sony Proprietary CD-ROM drivers cuz those are the only ones that install w/o complications...

more info.

What model Toshi?

how does the CD-rom attach? Cable, internal, docking station?

do you have all the utils from the toshi-site for your laptop. Somelaptops may require utility software to see CD-roms...especially if in a docking station.

It's the Toshiba Satellite 1605CDS. The CD-ROM is internal. The CD-ROM used to work, it just stopped working all of sudden. Maybe the cable shook loose while shipping it here? Is that a good possibility? I've never opened a laptop before. desktops I have.

That CD-Rom just slides into place if I remember correctly (not authorized to work on that particular Toshiba). Opening up that one takes some work. Try pushing on the front of the CD-Rom to shove it into the laptop (don't break it of course). More likely, it has died, but what do you have to lose from opening it up?
