Laptop CD-Rom Dilema... Argh!

I have an opportunity to purchase a Hitachi laptop for a very good price.. It does not include a built in CD-Rom but has support to attach an external CD-ROM or Floppy drive.. The friend selling it to me has the floppy drive but not the CD-Rom..

A couple of questions, I would like to purchase a cdrom for it, but Hitachi no longer makes laptops, and their distributer of parts does not carry the cdrom for this notebook.. so either I find one used, which I can't find, or find a new one, which nobody appears to sell. Is there any sort of standard for external cd-roms connecting to laptops? I don't know what type of connector it connects to, it may be proprietary, but maybe not?

This laptop does have USB, so it would support a USB attached cdrom, however I would like to format and reinstall this laptop so do any USB cd-roms include DOS drivers that I can install to run the USB cd-rom through DOS and install an operating system?

Once I have an OS installed obviously the USB will not be a problem, but I am the type of person that upgrades all the time and I would like to be able to format and reinstall completely..

I'm sure others have run into this before, anyone have any suggestions?

www.bluefin.com was the main hitachi parts distro but the links appears DOA
A very good price for a Hitachi laptop is around $40

Low battery life, screens that got corrupted, cheap plastic for the casing. (reasons hitachi left the laptop biz)

You might want to save your money.

Yeah I tried that webpage as well.. no luck.. doesn't seem to work or they are not in business anymore.. I realize Hitachi's probably aren't the best, but I have personally inspected this laptop and its in PERFECT condition.. only used probably 4-5 times, it sat in a case the rest of the time..

While the price isn't $40, its cheap enough to be half that of similarly equipped laptops.. Its from an associate who no longer needs it.. I am pretty much set on purchasing the laptop, so I appreciate your opinion on their quality, but I am more looking for a solution to my problem..

Does anyone know of USB CD-Rom's include DOS drivers of any sort? Or other solutions to my issue?
