laptop cd/dvd drive too slow?

my gf's HP laptop has trouble playing tv shows in avi format around 350mb on the dvd-r's that I burn for her. Nero drive info tool showed that it can read dvd-r and the speed of the cd/dvd drive was 24x. So when I view the files in win explorer and double click them, it takes at least 30 secs to start going and then it lags. Anyway around this?

If I recall, there was some avi hack that made it quicker to open avi files. I forgot what it was called.

I had a similar prob. with my ol' iBook. I never found a work-around, though. I just ended up copying the file onto my laptop temporarily to watch it.

Usual thing to suggest - make sure that DMA is enabled for the drive.

I'm using mplayer classic. pretty low memory usage.

DMA is enabled... checked it.

Would addding more memory (currently 256) help this or is it strictly a cd/dvd rom lack of ability?
