Laptop cannot do 100BaseT with Long Cable

Anyone know why laptops cannot send at 100BaseT with long cables (20+
feet)? The only way to get the thing working at 100BaseT is to use
like a 10 foot cable.

If i want/need to use a longer cable to connect to the network, I must
manually change the speed to 10BaseT.

The wierd thing is if I ping a local machine i'll end up loosing
packets at 100BaseT. If i use a USB Ethernet at 100BaseT it works fine
at 20+ ft.

At first, I was thinking that the PCMCIA didn't have enough power. Not
sure if it's the same, but on my new Sony FX210 it has an internal
RealTek ethernet card and has the same problems with distances.

Is this a common thing? Any way/thing i can do to use a long cable
(20+ ft) and still run at 100BaseT?

Thanks

It is certainly not true that all laptops cannot use 20 foot cables at 100BaseT. Have you only tried one cable? If so, it's most likely a problem with your cable.

I have a LinkSys PCMCIA card in my laptop and I've connected with no problems at all on a 100+ foot cable...

Possibly a bad cable?
