Laptop built-in speakers -- can you blow them?

I'm listening to SomaFM.com on my laptop's built-in Altec Lansing speakers and I am impressed with just how good they sound and how loud they can get compared to the speakers in my old (now deceased) Brand X Featron laptop (from 1999).

Anyway, I'm wondering, is it possible to blow out your laptop speakers if you turn the volume all the way up or do modern laptops protect against the possibility of doing that? I'm on a Compaq CQ60-210US that I purchased in late January. (I figure that I ought to find out before I pump up the volume.)

More then likely they can be damaged. Just turn it down some when it starts to distort.

Just about any speaker made can be blown. And, the same thing can be said about ears.

I played with a 17" Toshiba laptop and was amazed by the sound from the built-in Harman Kardons.

YES! My friend had this happen. Might as well buy a new laptop if it happens.
