A friend of mine forgot his bios password. Its on an hp notebook. Any recomendations on cracking the password? He called hp and they want 40 bucks. Any utilities?

If your experienced with laptops/are comfortable with opening laptops, then just open up his laptop. Look for a green block of like watch batteries or a battery and remove it, just like on a desktop system but a little bit more difficult to access (because opening up laptops is not a common occurance).

I opened it up and removed what looks like the cmos battery. Actually had to solder the flimsy post that held the battery pad b/c it broke during the removal. Anybody know if this was not the cmos battery or have a motherboard diagram for a hp ze5200?

I would just pay HP the $40. NOt worth the time and hassle.

You can try and look for a jumper to reset the password on the mobo.

This is a p4 based lappy. Anyway he just gave up on it. The taking out the cmos didnt work. I told him all I could think of at this point would be to go ahead and pay the 40.

My dad forgot his system password which is stored in BIOS. So, I removed the battery, and reflashed the Bios. Thus I overwritten the previous BIOS with a newer one. This may work as it worked on a ZE4101.
Let me know.

I sorry I unpluged the bios battery and put it back in. It that way it shortly removes power to the chip storing the password
