Laptop becoming rubbery and sticky

I recently inherited a Compaq Presario 2800T with a dead HD. I happen to have a spare 2.5" HD, so now it is up and running.

The problem I am having is that the black areas of the wrist rest and sides of the computer feel rubbery and sticky. This unit is pretty well worn, so some of the formerly black wrist rest areas are now exposed metal. It is the remaining black stuff that is so icky.

I tried using some gentle cleaners, but they were no help.

(For some reason, I am reminded of The Andromeda Strain.)

Any thoughts on how to resolve the rubbery feel and/or stickiness?

if it's degrading rubber it might be destined to be sticky - rubber gets
slimy sometimes with age. not a perfect comparison - plastic can get
real brittle.

one possibility is to ask HP-Compaq for a free replacement ... using the
Yahoo stock board
http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=hpq
under "message board"

a well-written request, full of "nice", with perhaps a few allusions to
what a toxic environmental nightmare it is ... has a good chance
of getting management attention & then a replacement (which
would probably be an upgrade.)

I wish. I believe this unit was bought in 2002.

So, should I just try to remove as much of the offending black stuff as I can?
