My gf just got a new laptop. I've never owned a laptop before and was wondering what the proper way to start off using the laptop is. I read the manual and it simply says to plug it in. Should I not use it until the battery is fully charged or something to that effect? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

If you plug it in and use it, it will still be charging the battery while you use it, so there's no problem there. The battery is probably also lithium-ion, which doesn't have any problems if you partially charge it and then unplug the charger and use it.

A little L-ion battery info here.

Yeah, you should probably plug it in and then just have at it, it will charge the battery. Chances are that the battery that's in the laptop might already be charged from the factory/store but maybe not.
