Laptop battery.....Li-on or NiMH? Which is the best?

Not knowing what kind of laptop......

I believe that Li-ion batteries are one shot deals and the Nicd batteries are recharable. Go for the Nicd, and make sure it has a high milli-amp rating. the higher the longer it lasts.

Li-Ion batteries are rechargeables, and they are more dependable than NiMH and MUCH more dependable than NiCd. Plus typically Li-Ion batteries that are about the same physical size as the NiMH batteries have more capacity.

L-ion has a much higher energy density than NiMH or NiCad. So for a given battery physical size, Li-Ion will give you quite a bit more run time. NiMh is next followed by Nicad. The down side of Li-ion is its temperature characteristics and self discharge. It isnt as tolerant as NiMh or Nicad. Nonetheless... I would take L-ion for the longer run time.
