Laptop battery is not recognized

I have a Compqaq Armada 7350MT.

I removed the battery when I replaced the hard drive, and now that I put the battery back it, it's completely dead. The computer won't recognize that there is a battery inside, and will not turn on without the power cable.

Once inside windows, the battery is not recognized.

The compaq web site says to upgrade the RomPaq, but I've already done that to the latest version.

It also says to removed the battery for 4 days, and then install the battery and charge for 24 hours.

Any ideas?
