Laptop battery fully charged but doesn't work...suggestions?

I have a laptop battery for a HP ZE1210 laptop. The battery seems to have gone defective. It supposedly has a full charge (the indicator on the battery itself says so, as does the battery conditioning program on the laptop). However, the battery won't power on the laptop. (I have a second battery that works with this laptop). I can charge it until the cows come home, and no difference. If I try the battery conditioning program, it starts off saying the battery is fully charged, then it trys to discharge the battery and says it's discharged almost immediately, then says it's charged again...

Any suggestions on what the problem could be? Battery has seen only very light use. I would try to open it and see if there's a problem, but it's not even clear how to open it...
