laptop battery (best storage)

did a quick search in this section and didnt find an answer. i have a brand new 700m. the battery wont be used alot so i want to detach it. is there a preferred method? its a lithium-ion battery. should i drain it completely or charge it fully before i take it off? does it matter? thanks in advance

Li-Ion batteries do not take a memory set from charging a partially charge one. Charge it fully, then run a battery calibration or "gas gauge" if your BIOS has it. If it doesn't, just charge it and use it.

For a spare battery in storage it is best to charge it to 40% and store it in a cool place.

just leave it in. you wont kill the battery by having it in the laptop. plus, as corkyg said, Li-ion doesnt have memory effect problems.

also, rechargeable batteries, IIRC, lose 1% of their charge per day if nothing is draining off of them. i dont know why but i feel like that piece of info is valid in this thread.

edit: oh, and ramit, ive always read that draining them completely before storing is a good idea. it seems wrong, but i dunno. you are correct, though, about storing it in a cool place. most of the time i put it in the fridge.

yeah i've noticed that it slowly drains if i dont use it. i guess eventually it'll "die" completely. i was just concerned because in the past the batteries to my cordless phone was drained and it wouldnt charge at all.

Do not let it completely discharge and store it. Discharge the battery to about 40% and then put it in a cool, dry place. A refridgerator is okay, just make sure to put it in a zip-loc bag and you might want to put something in the bag that will absorb any moisture.
If you completely discharge it and then store it, you might not be able to get it to charge again.
