Laptop batteries... Older notebook had a higher mAH battery?!?!?

Got a question. My old Inspiron 5000e had a 11.1volt 5400mAH battery, but my new Inspiron 8100 has a 14.8volt 3800mAH battery.
Why does the newer notebook have a lower mAH battery? Is it because it has to put out more volts, or is it something else?
 
5400mAHr * 11.1V = 60Whr
3800mAHr * 14.8V = 56Whr

My guess is that the new battery is either cheaper to make or is lighter. My guess is cheaper to make since the Inspiron 8100 feel like a ton of bricks.
 
Yea the voltage has a lot to do with it. The real measure of a laptop batteries capacity is in Watt Hours.
 
Yep also depends on battery type.

The new theoretical Zinc Silver batteries has a theoretically can hold around 640Whr and be the same size as today's batteries.

Fuel cells theoretically can do 10 times that (but not rechargable exactly).

The new mobile P4 Bainas is something to watch out for, as it is a totally new processor design usuing "gateless" transistors which signifatangly reduces heat output. Also organic tfts will greatly reduce power draw from the tft. Anyway assuming these technologies are implemented we could have notebooks running all day on battery power.
 
No, 56WH is the max for the Inspiron 8000/8100. The Inspiron 8200 has a 66WH battery but I don't think it would work properly in the 8000/8100. If you need more run time you could always get a second battery and put it in the media bay.

5 dead laptop batteries? I hope you didn't have to pay for them. I've had very bad luck getting non-working laptop batteries to work. I can get normal rechargeables to come back to life but bad laptop batteries usually have a problem with their circuitry not the actual cells. Well, good luck.
 
Well $20.50. If I get one working battery I'm doing good. If not, oh well was an interesting experiment.
