I bought a HP Pavillion laptop a year ago. 98% of the time it's plugged into the AC. I've heard this will degrade the battery pack over time. Should I remove the battery pack?

The battery degrades no matter what you do. With that said, from everything I've read keeping the battery at a 40% charge in a cool dry location will prevent it from degrading quickly. If you store it at full charge in a hot environment it will degrade VERY quickly. Here's a good article on battery life and storage: http://batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm I've followed the 40% charge guideline and my seven year old inspiron battery still gets nearly two hours of runtime.

I take it out. Had my Acer Aspire 5601 for like 4 to 5 years now and the battery still running strong.

Isn't it troublesome to take the battery out on HP laptops?

Not at all. Turn the unit over, and there should be a slide switch (spring loaded). Slide it to the left and lift the battery out by putting your thumbnail in the crack and lifting up and back as shown here.

HP

If you are home on A/C power, as has been stated above - out is best.
