Laptop Barebones

Is there much money to be saved from buying laptop barebones and constructing it yourself? I haven't really been able to locate many vendors selling barebones kits...

Yes, although it depends on the model. Asus offers a variety of excellent barebones; it's just sometimes a bit tricky to find them.

eBay is also a nice source of barebones laptops. You can pick up something cheap, and stuff all your old gear into it.

If you have some of the parts and a copy of Windows then maybe, but Dell has been having some hard-to-beat deals on Core Duo systems.

No, not at current prices.

but maybe u can save 100 bucks or so. msi has some nice 12", 13" Megabook barebones for 550-600 Euro.

Not much savings...was going to build my own Asus, but wound up getting one from a dealer, savings was +/- 10 bucks.

I *do not* recommend it. I've done it before, not worth it.

Barebones can have so many unintended issues its a VERY risky choice unless your goal is to learn about troubleshooting.

With many used notebooks I see people offering what they call barebones systems, but the only time they might be practical is if you already have all the missing pieces.
